Environmental Stuartship

Sharing the space with resident deer, cranes and other wildlife adds to the charm of the location. The resort is a vibrant landscape teaming with distinctive ecosystems. It is our mission to nurture the land and promote a wider understanding of the environment and its role in our lives.

The Audubon Signature Program facilitates environmentally sensitive property management and sustainable development by merging resource conservation, habitat enhancement, wildlife conservation, and environmental improvement. Its primary focus is on environmental quality and sustainability.

Summerland Hills is enrolled in the Silver Signature Program where AI provides environmental planning experts from its environmental planning department to prepare the Natural Resource Management Plan (NRMP). The NRMP is based on the Audubon Principles for Sustainable Resource Management and includes plans for: wildlife conservation, habitat enhancement, waste reduction and management, energy efficiency, water conservation, water quality management and integrated pest management.

Audubon International is a not-for-profit, environmental organization that spearheads education and conservation assistance programs to promote environmental stewardship and sustainability. AI members are active in more than 24 countries on five continents. AI starts where minimum environmental compliance leaves off—offering a “beyond compliance” approach to new developments.

Members are protecting common and endangered wildlife, conserving water and energy, restoring wetlands and educating youth about the value of good environmental stewardship. AI works with thousands of landowners and land managers through its Cooperative Sanctuary Programs and the Audubon Signature Programs (for new developments) to facilitate environmentally sensitive property management and sustainable development.

Through its Signature Programs, AI works closely with planners, architects and developers, to ensure that biodiversity conservation, environmental quality, and sustainable management are built into a project and continued after construction is completed. Its purpose is “to foster more sustainable human and natural communities through research, education, and technical assistance.”

Summerland Hills is the first BC resort to have been approved for membership in the Audubon International Signature Program.
